The 8th installment of our Carryology Artist Series. And the 4th imagining of our Unicorn Hunter. Introducing Unicorn Hunter V4, a set of two embroidered patches, in one limited edition run.
Benjamin is a Singapore-based concept artist and illustrator (some of his work here) as well as the mind behind his project titled |M.A.M.U| - Penguin. This concept was born from Benjamin’s love for three things, Penguins, Mechs and Military.
Now in its 7th year, his project has gained quite the cult following. Each of his releases features a new “Penguin Pilot” character that falls into 3 categories (Operators, Specialists and Elites) and 4 genres (‘I Protect’, ‘I Attack’, ‘I Repair’, and the hilarious final one, ‘I Fat’). Very much his own little military structure naming system.
The concept is that you, the Penguin Commander, build a little squadron of Penguin Pilots and they go into battle in their mech called |M.A.M.U| (Modular Autonomous Mech Unit). A little squad of Velcro penguins attached to your pack.
Pretty fun, right?
Well, sure. Mostly. But this one’s a little different.
Flashback to the launch of our very first Unicorn Hunter in the Carryology Artist Series. Benjamin and I were messaging that day — as we often did, swapping ideas, geekery, and gear admiration. I was already proudly rocking a few of his legendary Penguin Commander patches, and he had a growing stash of Carryology collab gear. Mutual fan club vibes.
Then the idea struck: What if… we mashed up Penguin Commander with Unicorn Hunter? A glorious, patch-powered crossover episode! The funny thing? Back then, we didn’t even know Unicorn Hunter would become a series. V2? V3? V4? Totally unplanned. But the seed was planted — and we couldn’t shake the idea. So we set out to make it real.
After new designs, revisions, and lots of little tweaks… we had our final character design of the Penguin Commander Unicorn Hunter.
When it came to the manufacturing of these incredible little unicorn hunting penguins, we decided to go ambitious and opt for embroidered versus woven. All of Benjamin’s Penguin Commanders have a ton of detail, so normally woven is the way to go. But hey, we love a challenge. There were dozens of sample revisions and prototypes, as we slowly perfected every individual stitch and specific color of thread used. In the end, each individual patch has 12 different thread colors, which takes 3 times longer to produce versus a 9 color design. But we think it was worth every bit of all the extra time and effort.
Patch #1: Unicorn Hunter Penguin solo character.
Patch #2: Unicorn Hunter Penguin with the outer border design.
Both are 100% embroidered with extremely high stitches per inch and Velcro-backed.
In carrying culture, we're always searching for that 'Unicorn'. That perfect seemingly unobtainable piece to add to our collection. A search that Carryologists know too well. All the highs and all the lows, and all the efforts one puts into the pursuit of capturing it. Sometimes it takes weeks. Sometimes it takes years. But the excitement is really in the hunt itself.
Our Unicorn Hunter acts as a symbol for all of the above. These patches can represent any piece of gear, any mission, any goal. It’s up to you to decide what your unicorn is.
Attach these patches to your pack and let them bring you luck on your hunt.
